Flash Floods

By Masooma Amjad Khokhar

As torrential monsoon rains drenched Pakistan, intense floods killed dozens of people and made hundreds homeless, according to officials  Ziaullah Langov, the disaster and home affairs adviser to the province's chief minister, reported on Saturday 31st July, that 127 persons, including women and children, died in the southern province of Balochistan after being swept away by surging flood waters. Flash floods from Balochistan infiltrated Sindh province in Pakistan, submerging up to 30 communities, bringing the total number of drowned villages in the hilly region to 50, according to local media.

The second stream of floodwater flooded the neighbouring Qambar-Shahdadkot area and the steep region of Kachho in Dadu district as torrential rains and flash floods persisted in Balochistan. ARY News claimed that this is increasing losses in several places. According to sources, "the number of drowned villages in the hilly region has reached 50," adding that "thirty additional villages in Kachho and connection highways have buried in the flood. From local sources we came to know that the residents of the afflicted areas are compelled to seek safety in hills and protective dykes in order to preserve their lives. In a community affected by flooding, a 70-year-old woman died of a health problem without receiving medical attention. This year's monsoon season brought unusually strong rains, especially in Balochistan. Hundreds of people were left stranded in Balochistan and other parts of Pakistan due to severe rains and flooding in the month of July, according to the country's disaster management officials. Nine family members drowned in Balochistan during the past 24 hours after being washed away by floods, according to local media that cited PDMA.

According to the Dawn, the victims include a lady and seven children. According to a report released by the PDMA, at least 10 persons were killed and 17 injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a result of floods and roof collapses. According to the report, approximately 100 homes were entirely destroyed by the floodwaters in the previous 36 hours, leaving inhabitants left in waist-deep water with no roof. The initial damage caused by a flood is not the only risk. Standing floodwater can also spread infectious diseases and can bring chemical hazards, and cause injuries. Breaking the Language Barrier

Breaking the Language Barrier: English is Not Divinity                                             By Masooma Amjad Khokhar In a world where English often takes center stage as the global lingua franca, it's easy to fall into the trap of equating proficiency in the language with intelligence. However, this assumption couldn't be further from the truth. English, like any other language, is simply a tool for communication, a means to convey thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It should never serve as a scale for measuring one's intelligence. First and foremost, it's crucial to recognize the vast array of languages spoken worldwide. From Mandarin Chinese to Spanish, from Arabic to Swahili, each language carries its own unique complexities, nuances, and cultural significance. The ability to communicate ...

FACTS ABOUT CHANGES IN CLIMATE

CLIMATE CHANGE   by Masooma Khokhar The empty promises are the same and the inaction is the same. So what exactly are we doing wrong and how do we fix it? We’re going to kick this off with some basic science. So bear with me, because this is important. These are the levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere over hundreds of thousands of years. But this spike in carbon dioxide at the very end that took off during the industrial revolution. We started breaking CO2 records in 1950, and we haven’t stopped till date do you know why? Well, scientists say there’s a 95% chance that human activity is the cause. We’ve been burning more and more fossil fuels like oil and coal, which release CO2, to power our homes, factories, airplanes and cars. There’s also a lot more of us. The global population has tripled in the past 70 years. And we’re consuming more products from animals that release another pollutant called Methane....
